Applied Sciences students raised awareness about waste management towards a circular economy

On May 28, the Institute of Applied Sciences at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) collaborated with Fico Tay Ninh Cement Joint Stock Company to organize a seminar titled "Waste Management Towards a Circular Economy" at the Thu Duc Campus.
The seminar emphasized the importance of waste management and the efforts of businesses in the journey towards sustainable development, helping students understand their roles and the roles of businesses in waste management in everyday life and production activities.

Opening the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Vice President of the University, reminded the young generation of the importance of protecting the environment and applying circular economy principles in waste management. This is a crucial factor in promoting the sustainable development of our planet, contributing to a healthier and better living environment.

Additionally, Dr. Nguyen Le Ha, Director of the Institute of Applied Sciences, expressed, "Today's seminar will bring many valuable insights because our students are receiving attention from businesses. Where there are production activities, there will be waste, and this waste needs to be managed in collaboration with companies. This is the work that creates the most value. Today's discussion is not only relevant to those studying environmental resources but also concerns all of us and the survival of our planet."

In the opening presentation, Mr. Tony Hung, Global Sustainable Development Supply Chain Manager at NEW BALANCE, discussed the topic "Efforts to Recycle and Recover Energy in the Shoes, Leather, and Garment Industry" with students. He introduced NEW BALANCE, the company's overall sustainability goals, and its "zero waste" strategy, focusing on product, environmental, and human rights criteria.

After that, Mr. Nguyen Trong Thien, Head of the Waste Co-Processing Management Department at Fico Tay Ninh Cement Company, introduced the company and explained the waste co-processing processes in cement kilns. He also discussed supply chains in manufacturing and guided students on how to access useful information from businesses.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Project Manager at Asia Environment Company, presented on the topic “At-Source Segregation Towards Reuse and Recycling.” The information focused on the circular economy, aiming to inspire students to participate in environmental protection activities, particularly in the field of waste management.

Before concluding, the seminar provided a space for students to discuss, ask questions, and share their opinions.
