On January 9, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) hosted a meeting with the University of Canterbury (UC) from New Zealand to build on prior discussions and accelerate the implementation of international education partnership programs.
At the beginning of the meeting, Ms. Nguyen Lan Huong, Deputy Head of the Department of International Relations and Project Management, presented an overview of HUTECH’s ongoing initiatives, including transnational education (TNE) programs, franchise programs, and short-term student exchange opportunities with international partners.
Ms. Nguyen Lan Huong provided a detailed introduction to HUTECH's collaborative education programs
Prof. Pedro Lee, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Canterbury, highlighted UC’s exceptional strengths in engineering. He noted that its Civil Engineering program has consistently ranked 19th globally for over a decade. He also emphasized UC’s practice-driven teaching approach, supported by state-of-the-art laboratories such as those specializing in earthquake engineering, mechatronics, and aerospace. Significantly, UC is among a select group of universities conducting experiments aboard the International Space Station (ISS), exemplifying its leadership in innovative research and application.
Prof. Pedro Lee elaborated on UC’s excellence in engineering
Prof. Pedro Lee also shared UC’s remarkable employment outcomes, with 95% of students securing jobs as early as their third year of study. This success reflects UC’s strong academic programs and serves as a solid foundation for fostering long-term collaboration between the two institutions.
The franchise program model emerged as a promising area for collaboration, particularly for attracting high-quality students. However, Prof. Pedro Lee acknowledged challenges in aligning curricula and facilities between the two universities. To address these challenges, he proposed the development of online laboratories, enabling students from both institutions to access cutting-edge technologies remotely. In response, Ms. Nguyen Lan Huong suggested starting with smaller pilot projects to evaluate and refine the partnership, ensuring high standards of education and sustainable collaboration.
Both sides actively discussed a variety of international education initiatives
In addition to student franchise programs, the discussion expanded to training and research collaboration. The University of Canterbury offered opportunities for HUTECH faculty to pursue doctoral programs at UC and later return to teach UC’s programs at HUTECH. Both institutions also expressed interest in pursuing joint research projects, especially in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing discussions on collaborative education programs between the two universities
Both sides agreed to move forward with discussions on franchise programs while also broadening cooperation in training and research. They pledged to prioritize potential academic fields, paving the way for new opportunities to develop high-quality human resources and contribute to sustainable societal growth.
